Teeth with amalgam metal fillings

Since the 1960s, many patients have come to rely on durable, beautiful tooth-colored composite resin fillings to restore cavities in their smiles. But until about the mid 1990’s, amalgam metal fillings were still a popular restoration option, too. Invented in the 1820’s, amalgam fillings were long the most effective way to protect teeth from decay. Unfortunately, however, they were notoriously noticeable, and in recent years it has been discovered that they could even be dangerous. Here’s why if you have amalgam fillings, it’s time to replace them and upgrade to strong, natural-looking composite resin!

What Are Amalgam Fillings?

Amalgam fillings are tooth restorations that protect areas removed by your dentist due to damage and decay. They are typically comprised of a mixture of metals, including silver, copper, tin, and mercury. While not usually problematic in small amounts, recent studies have shown that having eight or more of them can increase the level of mercury in your blood, and even if you have less than that, many patients dislike that they leave dark spots in their smile.

What Are My Replacement Options?

While your replacement options will vary depending on the size of the restoration needed, many dentists are now offering durable, natural-looking tooth-colored fillings, which are made of a long-lasting composite resin. Unlike amalgam metal, composite resin is typically made of a blend of materials that may include resin, quartz, glass, ceramic, coupling agents, and an initiator to help them harden under the UV light.

Other options may include dental crowns, or ceramic inlays or onlays.

Do I Need to Replace My Fillings?

Although dental fillings are designed to protect the teeth from further damage and restore removed enamel that was lost due to decay, they do not last forever and thus should eventually be replaced. The average amalgam metal filling can survive with proper care for up to 15 years, while composite resin fillings may last for around 10 years.  Though they may not have the longevity of amalgam, composite resin is considered much safer and because it can be matched to the color of your natural teeth, is much more attractive and discreet than its predecessor, making it an ideal choice for patients looking to safely and beautifully protect their smiles.

Remember, while amalgam metal fillings of the past did serve an important purpose, today’s composite resin restorations provide safer, more discreet protection. Don’t put your health at risk. Speak to your dentist about the benefits of upgrading to durable, beautiful tooth-colored fillings.
