If you’re currently dealing with a severe toothache, there’s a good chance you’ve already reached out to your dentist about it. With a visit on the calendar to resolve the issue, you might still be wondering what you can do to ease the pain in the meantime. Fortunately, there are a few simple things worth trying, and you may already have what you need right in your kitchen. Here are four home remedies that can offer some temporary relief.
1.) Place a Cold Pack
A cold pack is oftentimes a go-to way to soothe discomfort. The cooler temperature reduces blood flow to the area, creating a mild numbing effect. You can easily make one by filling a plastic bag with ice and wrapping it in a cloth. Apply it to your cheek in 15-minute intervals to avoid irritating your skin.
2.) Rinse with Warm Salt Water
Salt might be something you reach for to season your meals, but it can also come in handy for toothache relief. Rinsing with a saltwater solution can reduce inflammation while clearing away bacteria and lingering debris. Stir a tablespoon of salt into a glass of warm water and swish it around like you would a regular mouthwash.
3.) Chew a Garlic Clove
Garlic isn’t just loved for its flavor and aroma. It also carries natural antibacterial properties that have been used for centuries. When applied to a toothache, it can help combat some of the bacteria contributing to the discomfort. Try slowly chewing a clove and letting it rest against the affected tooth, or mash it into a paste with a bit of salt and apply it directly to the area.
4.) Apply Real Vanilla Extract
Vanilla extract does more than flavor your favorite baked goods. Thanks to its alcohol content, it can also numb pain and support healing when used for a toothache. Apply a small amount to your finger or a cotton swab and dab it onto the affected tooth. Just be sure you’re using pure vanilla extract, not an imitation version.
While these remedies can offer welcome relief in the moment, keep in mind that they’re only meant to be temporary. Use them to manage discomfort until you’re able to see your dentist for a lasting solution that gets you back to a comfortable, pain-free smile.
