Many people choose Invisalign over traditional braces because the clear aligners are considered more comfortable and discreet. The transparent trays are made of smooth plastic and fit over your arches to gently shift your teeth to their ideal places, without the need for sharp metallic wires and brackets bonded to your teeth.

But some patients are surprised to learn they need to wear a retainer after their treatment is complete. Continue reading to learn more about why and how long you might expect to wear one!

What is a Retainer?

It’s normal to feel excited as you approach the end of your anticipated Invisalign treatment timeline. But if your dentist just informed you that you’re going to need a retainer following its completion, it might dampen your enthusiasm. You might even wonder whether it’s truly necessary or how long you’ll need to continue wearing it.

These custom-fitted oral appliances don’t exert enough pressure on your teeth to move, but they do ensure that everything remains in its rightful place long enough for your mouth to adjust to the recent changes. This can help prevent your pearly whites from shifting back out of alignment following your orthodontics.

What Kind of Retainer Will I Need?

There are a few types of oral devices that can help maintain your upgraded dental alignment following your treatment, and your dentist can recommend an appropriate option for you because it’s based significantly on your individual circumstances.

For instance, fixed retainers consist of a thin wire that’s attached to the back of your six front teeth and isn’t intended to be removed and reinserted except with the help of your provider. However, you may also be given clear plastic retainers that resemble Invisalign trays, or an option that combines a plastic base with metal wiring.

How Long Must I Wear My Retainer?

One of the first questions on many people’s minds when they learn about retainers is how long they’ll be expected to wear one. After all, you’re likely eager to be done with dental work and show off your beautifully straightened smile.

Your provider can advise you on how long and how often to wear it, based on your unique situation. For instance, some individuals are required to wear them for 20 to 22 hours daily for about three to six months, then gradually reduce the wear time until they are only worn at night a few days a week.  But there’s also a chance that wearing your retainer will be a lifelong commitment, because your teeth can potentially shift back to their starting places even years after completing Invisalign.

The best way to determine whether you’ll need a retainer is to consult your provider directly.
