If you’re starting Invisalign treatment, you probably already know about the clear, removable aligners that gradually straighten your teeth. They’re discreet, convenient, and a popular alternative to traditional braces. But if you’re a coffee lover, you may be wondering: can I drink coffee with Invisalign? The short answer is not while wearing your aligners. Coffee and other dark or hot beverages can cause staining, warping, or damage. But don’t worry—you don’t have to give up your daily cup of joe altogether. Here’s what you should know.

Why You Shouldn’t Drink Coffee with Aligners In

Staining

Invisalign trays are made of clear plastic, which means they can easily stain. Coffee, like tea, wine, and soda, contains pigments that can turn your aligners yellow or brown. Since aligners are meant to be nearly invisible, staining defeats one of their biggest benefits.

Heat Damage

Coffee is often served hot, and high temperatures can warp Invisalign trays. Even minor warping can affect how well they fit, potentially delaying your treatment progress.

Increased Risk of Cavities

Drinking coffee with aligners in traps liquid between the trays and your teeth. The sugar and acidity from coffee can linger, creating the perfect environment for bacteria. This increases your risk of cavities, enamel erosion, and bad breath.

How to Enjoy Coffee During Invisalign Treatment

Remove Your Aligners First

The safest way to enjoy coffee is to remove your aligners before drinking. Store them in their case (never wrap them in a napkin—you might accidentally throw them away). Once you’ve finished your coffee, rinse your mouth with water before putting the aligners back in.

Brush Afterward When Possible

If you add cream or sugar to your coffee, brushing before reinserting your aligners is ideal. This prevents sugar from sticking to your teeth and reduces your risk of cavities. If brushing isn’t possible, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water.

Drink Quickly, Not All Day

Sipping coffee slowly throughout the day means your aligners will be out longer, which can disrupt your treatment schedule. Invisalign aligners should be worn 20–22 hours daily. Try to enjoy your coffee in one sitting rather than stretching it out over hours.

Switch to Iced Coffee with a Straw

If you prefer cold brew or iced coffee, use a straw. Drinking through a straw reduces contact with your teeth, minimizing staining and acidity exposure. Just remember—you still need to remove your aligners first.

So, can you drink coffee with Invisalign? Yes—but only if you remove your aligners first. Drinking coffee while wearing them risks staining, warping, and damaging your teeth. By taking a few extra steps—removing trays, rinsing or brushing afterward, and limiting how long you go without aligners—you can still enjoy your favorite coffee without slowing down your treatment.
